There is nothing like watching a movie on the big screen. There are few places where most people feel as comfortable as they do in their home. If you can combine the two, the size and sound of the big screen, with the comfort of watching in your home, then you have a very good idea of what a video projector can do for your entertainment system. What kind of features should you look for when choosing a projector for home use and what components need to be added to it in order to get the most benefit out of you investment?

The nice thing about projectors is that the units that are designed for home use are often the least expensive. Things to look out for when choosing a projector are the life expectancy of the bulbs and the cost of replacement bulbs, as well as the input types and outputs that the projector will accept. Replacement bulbs are usually one of the most expensive maintenance features of a projector, so it is a good idea to get a figure on how much replacement bulbs are since even though they do not need to be replaced often, when they do you will need to spend some money to replace them. A projector with a bulb life in the range of 4000 hours is an ideal range for a projector intended for home use.

There are a lot of different kinds of video inputs out there and ideally you want to choose a projector that is as flexible as possible when it comes to the kinds of video input it can accept. Some of the more standard kinds of input are RGB, S-Video, component and composite inputs. The video modes are also something to keep in mind especially with the growing popularity of high definition television signals. From 480p to 1080i, having a wide range of available video modes means that you can watch movies and television programs formatted in almost any form.

It may also be a good idea to look at the power consumption of the projector, especially if you plan to be using it on a fairly regular basis. While the vast majority have fairly high power consumption, there are some models out there specifically designed to conserve on power consumption. If you are looking to keep your electric bills low it may be well worth it to look into these more energy efficient models.

Of course a big screen picture without the appropriate surround sound does not really create a theater feel. Most people these days already have some form of surround hooked up to their existing television. The nice thing with a projector is that the exact same sound system will work for it. If you are starting from scratch you may want to check and see what the highest quality audio output you can have for your projector is, and then purchase your surround sound system accordingly. You can enjoy the comforts of home and the size and sound of the big screen with a properly equipped home theater system.
